FS International has successfully completed the technical consultancy for the modernisation of the Ferrocarril Central line in Uruguay, as an auditor of the executive project. After the challenging activity started in March 2020, the final report was presented to the Uruguayan Ministry of Transport and Public Works.
The Grupo Vía Central consortium, composed of the local companies Saceem and Berkes, the Spanish Sacyr and the French NGE, is upgrading the 273 km corridor between the port of Montevideo and Paso de los Toros. These works are part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract awarded last year for the design, financing, construction and maintenance of the line for 18 years.
Despite the operational hurdles due to the Covid-19 pandemic, FS International conducted its activities in full compliance with the contractual terms, coordinating a local team in Montevideo and a pool of experts at the headquarters in Rome, including specialists of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).
"We are very proud to have contributed to a project of great strategic importance with the experience gained in 180 years of Italian railway history", confirmed Filippo Scotti, CEO of FS International. "We consider our success in Uruguay particularly remarkable in this period of global crisis, and we look forward to developing FS International's business in the area".
