Hellenic Train: record investment and innovation for the Greek railways

Hellenic Train ushered in a new era for Greek railway transport, turning strategic objectives into tangible results. This historic moment is marked by the revision of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) agreement between the Hellenic Republic and Hellenic Train, together with a major contract with Alstom for the supply of 23 new electric trains.

The revised PSO agreement introduces a stable and clearly defined framework, ensuring the continuity of public rail services and laying down the necessary conditions for long-term investment, accountability and operational reliability. In this context, the commitments made at the highest institutional levels are now becoming tangible actions.

As part of this development, Hellenic Train signed a €308 million contract with Alstom for 23 Coradia Stream electric trains - the first order for new rolling stock in Greece in decades and the largest private investment ever made in the country’s land transport sector. The investment is fully funded by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, confirming FS’s strategic and long-term commitment to Greek railways modernization.

The new trains, which will be delivered by 2027, will be used on the Athens–Thessaloniki intercity route and on the suburban networks in Athens and Thessaloniki. Fitted with the most advanced European safety systems, including ERTMS and ETCS, and designed to ensure comfort, accessibility and energy efficiency, they will offer a superior travel experience with enhanced operational safety features.

The joint implementation of the new PSO framework and the contract with Alstom is a significant step forward for rail transport in Greece. It reflects FS Italiane Group’s leading role in carrying out complex, high-impact investments and proves a clear commitment to building a modern, resilient and customer-focused rail system, in compliance with European standards and in line with long-term economic and social development.

The first Coradia Stream train arrived in Thessaloniki for testing in early February, launching the certification process for Hellenic Train’s new electric rolling stock.
