On 12 March 2026, some senior residents of Gouda had the chance to try out independent travel by bus, accompanied by Qbuzz drivers.
The pilot project, carried out in partnership with the Ontmoetingscentrum van Noord Community Centre is set on making public transport more accessible and attractive to older people, thereby promoting greater independence in their daily whereabouts.
There are around 150,000 people over 65 living in the Zuid-Holland Noord area, but only 50% of them use the bus occasionally. The project will reduce the issues perceived by senior travellers and boost their confidence in public transport.
“Through this pilot project, we want to help older people use public transport, and enhance their safety and confidence. We know that for many people even a simple bus trip can be a challenge. However, it is essential for maintaining social connections, shopping and visiting family. Practical session supported by the bus drivers
Thanks to their in-depth knowledge of the routes, stops and local area, the bus drivers involved provided immediate answers to travellers’ questions and practical advice, fostering a productive and accessible learning experience. During the trial journey, payment was made by bank card to show how straightforward the process is. At the end of the session, all participants were given two free day passes to practise what they had learnt on their own.
Additional support
The Doe me met het OV ('Take me with public transportation') service offered by the local voluntary organisation Roetz Nederland, provides further guidance to those who need extra support when travelling by public transport. Seniors can register with a hostess or host at the Ontmoetingscentrum van Noord Community Centre.
Possible project extension
The pilot project is currently under evaluation. Should the initiative prove successful, it may be extended to other municipalities in the Zuid-Holland Noord region, underlining Qbuzz’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and innovation in public transport services.
